HUNNIC TRIBES, Alchon Huns. Uncertain king, circa 450-500. AE (Bronze, 12 mm, 0.71 g), uncertain mint, probably in Gandhara. Bust with elongated skull to right; behind head, tamgha; before head, fire altar. Rev. JANADITYA or JAVADITYA ('Sun of Victory' in Brahmi) in two lines. Vondrovec, Type 55B. Struck on a somewhat short flan and with some deposits, otherwise, about very fine.
From the collection of Dr. D. Löer, formed since the 1970s, privately acquired from Ancient Coins Canada.
The fire altar before the bust of the King (here off flan) also appears on drachms of the Alchon ruler Mehama, perhaps making our piece contemporaneous.
