Eirene, nun and zoste, 2nd half 11th century. Seal (Lead, 22 mm, 7.45 g, 12 h). MHP - ΘV The Mother of God 'Nikopoios', nimbate, holding medallion of Christ with both hands. Rev. [ΘKЄ R,Θ,] / TH CI Δ૪Λ, / ЄIRINI AX / KAI ZOC/TH ('Mother of God, help Eirene, nun and zoste') in five lines. Laurent, Corpus V/3, 2011. Zacos II 448. Rough surfaces, otherwise, very fine.

The dignity of zoste patrikia was awarded to the empress's chief attendant. Her high status is evident from the fact that she had the right to dine at the imperial table, together with the patriarch and a few high courtiers. 'zoste' was the only truly female dignity at the court, as she held her rank in her own right, independent of the rank of her husband. Our Eirene must have belonged to the highest aristocracy during her life at the imperial court, but she eventually retired to a monastery.
