UNCERTAIN GERMANIC TRIBES, Pseudo-Imperial coinage. Late 3rd-4th centuries AD. 'Aureus' (Subaeratus, 20 mm, 1.73 g, 7 h), 'Plated Group', imitating Probus, 276-282. D[...]OZIIMLIII O Helmeted and cuirassed bust of Probus to left, holding spear over his right shoulder. Rev. [...]ZII II O И=HO Roma, helmeted, seated left on throne, holding wreath (or stylized Victory?) in her right hand and spear in her left; between throne and spear, Ƨ. Edge chipping and some breaks in plating, otherwise, good very fine.
From the Aurum Barbarorum Collection, Leu 10, 24 October 2021, 2411.
This lovely piece combines the military bust of Probus from Leu 10 (2021), 2401 and 2403-2405 above with the reverse of Leu 10 (2021), 2410. The latter is carefully reproduced down to the annulets on Roma's chest and the mirrored Ƨ between the throne and the spear. Were it not for the edge chipping, we would likely also find a decorative zigzag line in the exergue.
