ISLAMIC, Syria & al-Jazira (Pre-Seljuq). Hamdanids. Sayf al-Dawla (Abu'l Hasan 'Ali), circa AH 330 / circa AD 942. Dirham (Silver, 26 mm, 3.02 g), citing the Abbasid caliph al-Mu'ti and Sayf al-Dawla, Tarsus, AH 340 = AD 951/2. Album 749F. Of the highest rarity, one of just two known examples. Minor areas of weakness and with light corrosion, otherwise, very fine.
From the collection of Dr. D. Löer, ex Album 30, 18 January 2018, 377.
This extremely rare issue was struck solely in the name of Sayf al-Dawla: it omitts the names of his brother and co-ruler, Nasir al-Dawla. Sayf's sole reign lastet only for a short period in AH 330, but a few coins such as this one were also struck with later dates.
