ISLAMIC, Persia (Post-Seljuk). Khwarizm Shahs. 'Ala al-Din Muhammad II, AH 596-617 / AD 1200-1220. Jital (Bronze, 20 mm, 3.27 g), siege issue, struck under the 'Malik of Kurzuwan', Kurzuwan, Rabi II AH 618 = June AH 1221. Album 1971. The obverse struck slightly off center and with a minor edge crack, otherwise, good very fine.
From the collection of Dr. D. Löer, formed since the 1970s.
The identity of the 'Malik of Kurzuwan' ('King of Kurzuwan' in Arabic) is shrouded in mystery. We will probably never know who lead the defense of Kurzuwan in the two months in the summer of AH 618 until Genghis Khan conquered and annihilated the city.
