KINGS OF MACEDON. Perseus, 179-168 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 31 mm, 14.19 g, 12 h), reduced standard. Pella or Amphipolis, circa 173-171. Diademed head of Perseus to right. Rev. BAΣIΛEΩΣ - ΠEΡ-ΣEΩΣ Eagle with spread wings standing right on thunderbolt; above, monogram; to right, monogram; between the eagle's legs, monogram of AN; all within oak wreath; in exergue, plow to right. Mamroth, Perseus, 19b. De Luca 141 (O33/R128). SNG Berry 382. Beautifully toned. Some die breaks and die rust, otherwise, good very fine.
From the Hestia Collection, formed over the past five decades, privately acquired before 2005.
This coin is clearly a struck original, yet the weight is extremely low for the issue. Perhaps it is a perfectly preserved plated subaeratus struck from (stolen?) old official dies, which might help to explain the several die breaks on both the obverse and the reverse.
