JUDAEA, Bar Kochba Revolt. 132-135 CE. Æ (24mm, 6.63 g, 6h). Undated, attributed to year 3 (134/5 CE). Palm tree with two bunches of dates / Grape leaf. Mildenberg – (O9/R96 [unlisted die combination]); Meshorer 283; Hendin 6464. Dark green patina, cut in antiquity, struck with broken/worn obverse die, countermark on obverse. Coin & countermark Near VF. New die combination for series.

This reverse die was known to Mildenberg paired with obverse die 10. As such, the present coin, with the reverse die paired with obverse die 9, suggests that this reverse die was probably the first die used with obverse die 10. Interestingly, obverse die 9 was apparently short-lived, as it was only known paired with four reverses (now five), while other obverses survived through many more pairings. On this coin, it is clear that the obverse die was broken when it was used; the left half of the design is totally obliterated. One wonders whether this coin was cut as a means to remove it from circulation due to the defaced appearance of the reverse?
