The St. Albans Collection of English Gold Coins | NGC UNC Details | George I (1714-1727), 'Prince Elector' Guinea, 1714, first laureate head right, rev. crowned shields cruciform, eight strings to harp, emblem-adorned sceptres in angles, edge obliquely milled, 8.37g, 6h (MCE 245; Schneider II, 544; Farey 580; EGC 502 THE PLATE COIN [cf. pp. 387]; Spink 3628), two small flecks and die striations across otherwise happily lustrous fields, the die softness by ear less obtrusive than typically encountered with only minor resultant softness to Garter star, a most pleasing extremely fine, an iconic and sought-after one year type, oft encountered by connoisseurs but rarely so honest and original in the hand as this, the English Gold Coinage (1649-1816) Plate coin, with NGC 'St Albans' Certification, ridiculously graded UNC Details ~ Obverse Cleaned (#6295553-032), especially as it has previously been graded 'NGC MS61' (#3153586-001).

Heritage, Long Beach Signature Sale 3002, 18 September 2008, lot 21178 - $6,000 - wherein graded NGC MS61 (#3153586-001) - "small flaw on the obverse edge at 3 o'clock. The coin is softly struck in the king's hair at the deepest part of the die. The engraver, Croker, was very optimistic in the cutting of the die, expecting the machinery to be a match for his artistry, but it was not to be. This was only used for 1714, and a flatter design was employed for the next issue. The design and all the letters are somewhat medallic in appearance. Perhaps that what was what Croker was trying to convey - the new king in all his glory. It should be remembered that Anne died in August of 1714, and yet England still managed to mint this coin during the same year, quite impressive!
