(g) The St. Albans Collection of English Gold Coins | NGC PF62 UCAM | William IV (1830-1837), Pattern Proof Two-Pounds, 1831, by W Wyon and Merlen, bare head right, rev. crowned shield in mantle, edge plain, 15.90g, 7h (W&R 258; Murdoch III, 438; King 206; Stratos 172; Spink 3828), the deftest cabinet friction in otherwise brilliant original fields, gorgeously accentuated by rich orange-red cabinet toning, the central devices beautifully frosted and handsomely cameo completing the extraordinary eye appeal of this talismanic 19th Century rarity - a fulsome superlative would be difficult to profess! A WONDROUS GEM, with NGC 'St Albans' Certification, exceptionally harshly graded PF62 ULTRA CAMEO (#6295553-047).
Provenance
'A Distinguished Collection', purchased en bloc via Spink, August 2018,
SJA 12, 5 November 2009, lot 577 - a few light hairlines, otherwise about FDC with an attractive red tone - £5,500,
The Golden Horn Collection, Stack's, 12 January 2009, lot 4227 - this is a lovely proof with exceptional cameo contrast and deep orange peel toning. Hairlines in the fields are typical, but the overall eye appeal is quite exceptional, choice brilliant
