Pamphylia, Uncertain mint AR Stater. 380-333 BC. Athena Nikephoros standing to left, coiled snake at feet; Sidetic script on right / Apollo standing to left, quiver over shoulder, holding patera over lit altar and sceptre; Sidetic script on right. Unpublished in the standard references; Nomos AG 24, 216 (hammer: 18,000 CHF).
Good Very Fine; wonderful old cabinet tone with attractive hints of iridescence. Extremely rare and unpublished, with only a handful on CoinArchives.
From a private Australasian Collection.
This unusual coin bears types of Side, but the distinctive pomegranate mark of the city is missing, and there is instead a serpent at the feet of Athena on the obverse. The inscriptions are definitively in the Pamphylian alphabet.
