Augustus(?) Æ 25mm of Segovia, Spain. Circa 31 BC - AD 14. Bare head of Augustus(?) to right; C-L flanking / Soldier on horseback to right, holding spear; SEGOVIA in exergue. RPC I 478; ACIP 1867; Vives 135-1. 7.79g, 25mm, 2h.
Extremely Fine; among the finest specimens to come to auction in the past decade, easily the equal of the Tauler & Fau example which hammered for EUR 2,200 earlier in 2022 (Auction 114, lot 29).
From the inventory of a German dealer.
Though there remains much debate as to who is depicted on the obverse, Grant, in his 'Imperium To Auctoritas, A Historical Study of Aes Coinage In The Roman Empire, 49 BC-AD 14', produces a convincing argument that it is Augustus, based on its similarity to bare-headed portraits found on other provincial issues (see, for example, his famous cistophorus of Pergamum (RIC I 487)).
