NGC MS63 | *TOP POP* | James II (1685-1688), Sixpence, 1688, laureate and draped bust left, rev. late shields altered from early, four strings to harp, obliquely milled edge, 6h (Pywell-Phillips 132; ESC 1528; Bull 780; Spink 3413), the usual touch of die softness to highest relief and a hairline die flaw through reverse legend at 6 o'clock, otherwise uniformly cabinet toned over original lustrous fields, extremely fine or very near so, in NGC holder, graded MS63 (Cert. #4628813-004) [Joint Finest Certified].
Provenance
Heritage 'Long Beach Signature' 3067, 6-7 September 2018, lot 31586 - "Sixpences were a rare denomination during the reigns of Charles II, James II and William and Mary, only becoming common after the Great Recoinage of 1695. Accordingly, high grade specimens such as this delightful 1688 offering are immensely rare and hardly ever seen at auction. This example is particulary attractive aside from its rarity; toned a beautiful gray-gold, and exceptionally well produced. Barely a mark on it and indeed this appears worthy of an even higher certified grade. A superlative specimen." - $1,700
Estimate: £800 - £1000
