William III (1694-1702), Great Recoinage, Bristol, Shilling, 1697 B, third laureate, draped and cuirassed bust variety right, B over E [?] below, rev. no stops after MAG, FRA or HIB, crowned shields cruciform, five strings to harp, six billets, edge obliquely milled, 5.86g, 6h (Bull 1164 [R3]; ESC 1109; Spink 3512), a trace of adjustment at top of hair and some flecking both sides, a further die crack on the obverse, otherwise, a pleasingly good very fine, extremely rare.
Provenance
D G Barney, Colyton (Devon), by private treaty, 5 July 1993
,
Bull is unsure of the numbers of strings and billets and gives 6s-6b?, but here there are clearly five strings. A quick check on Coinarchives gives us only four other examples for comparison, and three of these have six strings. The only one with five strings is the Slaney example. Just for fun, a further check of the reverse of the Slaney coin shows the same thick second string as well as all the same flaws, on the 9 of the date and the R of BR for example, as on this coin.
Estimate: £450 - £550
