William III (1694-1702), Great Recoinage, York, Sixpences (8), 1696 (5), Capital Y (2), first laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right, Y below, rev. large crowned shields cruciform, early harp with three strings, nine billets, obliquely milled edge, 3.12g, 6h (Bull 1294; ESC 1540), almost fine; another, no stops on obverse, rev. three strings, eight billets, 3.08g, 7h (Bull 1295 [R2]; ESC 1541; Spink 3526), flaw through legend and lightly flecked, otherwise toned, granular surfaces, struck details almost very fine, very rare; also, Script y (3), as first, rev. three strings, nine billets, 3.03g, 6h, cleaned, a bolder fine; another, three strings, nine billets, 2.77g, 7h, rubbed, good / fair; and, three strings, nine billets, 2.96g, 7h (Bull 1296; ESC 1539; Spink 3525), slightly bent and darkly toned, fair; additionally, 1697 (3), first bust, script y, small crowns, late harp (2), no strings visible, seven billets, 2.96g, 6h, waterworn, fair; another, unclear, 2.96g, 6h (Bull 1298; ESC 1562; Spink 3536), dented and crimped, struck details fair, scarce; lastly, third bust, capital Y below, rev. small crowns, four strings, billets unclear, 2.46g, 6h (Bull 1301, albeit four strings not listed; ESC 1573 [R2]; Spink 3545), adjustment to centres and corresponding weakness to Lion of Nassau, otherwise rich dark cabinet tone, further historic scratches, struck details almost fine, rare; an interesting academic assemblage for York from the years of the Great Recoinage (8).
