The Royal Academy of Arts, AR Medal, 1886, by W. Wyon, awarded to Will. Geo. Wilson, for the best copy of a landscape, VICTORIA D. G: BRITANNIARUM REGINA MLCCCXXXVII. PATRONA., diademed bust left, rev. THE ROYAL ACADEMY OF ARTS INSTITUTED MDCCLXVIII, the Belvedere torso, STUDY, below, WILL. GEO. WILSON, FOR THE BEST COPY OF A LANDSCAPE . 10TH DEC. 1886. on edge, 56mm, 87.24g (Eimer 1306A; BHM 1794), previously lightly cleaned and with a handful of small contact marks, otherwise attractively toned and with a residual proof-like quality, very fine.
William George Wilson (c.1850)
Little information is known about an artist going by the name of William George Wilson. However, his date of birth and an interest in landscape as a subject matter perhaps suggests that the artist is a one George Wilson. Wilson was born near Cullen in Banffshire and went on to study at the Royal Academy and then to the Slade School of Fine Art. There he formed a friendship with the portrait painter J. B. Yeats, with whom he founded an informal artistic group called 'The Brotherhood'. Members included Edwin Ellis, John Nettleship and Sidney Hall, all of whom were influenced by the work of William Blake. Wilson was an accomplished draughtsman, and was interested in the patterns produced in nature by foliage. His landscapes were often very detailed. Wilson's interest in the realistic depiction of the natural world would therefore account for this medal being awarded for the best copy of a landscape.
