PCGS AU53 | Henry VI, First Reign (1422-1461), Rosette-Mascle Issue, Groat, 1430-1431/32, London, crowned bust facing, trefoils on cusps, rev. CIVITAS LONDON, long cross with trefoil of pellets in angles, 1h, m.m. plain cross (North 1445; Spink 1858), striking softness to face, otherwise rich '300 year old' tone across broad round flan, very fine and with an historic pedigree to one of England's earliest numismatists, in PCGS 'Archbishop Sharp' holder, optimistically graded AU53 (Cert. #34949110).

Archbishop Sharp, Part II, Morton & Eden 91, 7 December 2017, lot 114 [part]
Dr. John Sharp (1645-1714) was Archbishop of York from 1691 until his death in 1714, and from a note in his Will we know that he began collecting coins in 1687. He was in contact with other numismatists of his day, especially Ralph Thoresby of Leeds, the recipient of his '"'Observations on the Coinage of England, with his letter to Mr. Thoresby, 1698-9", published rather later in 1785 and for which he is best known to numismatists of the present day. A most useful list of relative works can be found in the Bibliography of 'The Life and Times of John Sharp, Archbishop of York", by A. Tindal Hart, S.P.C.K., 1949.
