BYZANTINE. Middle Period. Bronze Pectorial Reliquary Cross. Circa 8th-9th century AD. (3.2" X 2" / 8.4 X 4.5 cm). A fine bronze pectoral reliquary cross half. Depicted on the face is the Virgin Orans, or standing facing with upraised hands and wearing a long robe. Beneath her is the full length robed figure of Saint George and to each side smaller robed busts of the Apostles John and Peter. A single one line inscription above is either a local dialect or simply blundered but intending to mean "All Hallowed". Even dark green patina, nicley engraved with some adhesions to the interior surface.
