[Sotheby, Wilkinson & Hodge, London]. Catalogue of the Important and Valuable Collection of Greek and Roman Coins in Gold and Silver Formed by the Late L.G. Schlesinger Y. Guzman, Esq.. (London, 20 July 1914). 4to., pp. 30, 207 lots; 10 excellent plates. Neatly bound in full cloth, blue morocco title label to spine, lettered in gilt, the original printed wrappers preserved. [With:] Catalogue of the Collection of Greek, Roman, English & Foreign Coins &c. in Gold and Silver, the Property of Kendall Hazeldine, Esq. (London, 3 April 1914). 4to., pp. 19, (1), 161 lots; 5 fine plates. Bound in later red cloth, lettered in gilt. The ancient sections of both catalogues heavily annotated in pencil, noting prices realised and buyers' names as well as occasional stock or commission bids, underbidders, previous provenances, similar examples sold at auction as well as hammer prices and occasional viewing notes. Both copies thumbed, and with a few light marks. Fine overall. Clain-Stefanelli 1772. Grierson p. 287. Spring 811 & 810. Website shipping rates do not apply. Please note that this lot will ship from our London office. Additional shipping charges will apply.

The annotations in both catalogues made by Ernest John Seltman, British numismatist and coin dealer, father of Charles Seltman (and quite coincidentally, speech therapist to a young E. S. G . Robinson), who was frequently called upon to represent clients, including the British Museum, at auction. Although not indicated as such in this catalogue, the lots purchased are clearly marked 'Seltman' in other annotated copies of these sales and a number of Seltman's other catalogues were recently sold from the Salton Library and are clearly annotated in the same manner and style. Fascinating records of two major collections, many with provenances dating well into the nineteenth century. The Guzman sale held just a one week before the outbreak of World War 1.
