THE LEVANT OR THE EAST. Uncertain. Mid 4th Century BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 24 mm, 17.32 g, 9 h), Eastern imitation of a mid 4th century issue of Athens. Head of Athena to right, with profile eye, wearing crested Attic helmet with palmette and three olive leaves. Rev. ΑΘΕ Owl standing right, head facing; behind, olive spray and crescent moon. For the Athenian originals: HGC 4, 1598. Kroll 15. SNG Copenhagen 63. Cf. Van Alfen, Owls 73-7. A remarkable imitation of the folded-flan recoinage struck in mid 4th century Athens. Some minor bangs and roughness, otherwise, good very fine.


The full flan of this coin is quite reminiscent of the Athenian imitations produced by Sabaces in Egypt during the 330s.
