C. Renius, 138 BC. Denarius (Silver, 18 mm, 3.75 g, 6 h), Rome. Helmeted head of Roma to right; behind neck, X (mark of value). Rev. C • RENI/ ROMA Juno in biga of goats to right, holding sceptre and reins in right hand and whip in left. Babelon (Renia) 1. BMCRR Rome 885-7. Crawford 231/1. RBW 961. Sydenham 432. Very fine.

During the second century BC gods and heroes driving bigae or quadrigae were quite common on denarii of the Roman Republic. Most of the motifs and even some types were taken directly from Greek models. Only a handful seem to have been true new inventions. One of these was the depiction of Juno in a biga of goats, introduced by C. Renius (for more information on bigae and quadrigae on Roman Republican coins, see: S. Böhm, Die Münzen der Römischen Republik und ihre Bildquellen, 1997, 5-14).
