SICILY. Syracuse. Second Democracy, 466-405 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 29 mm, 17.11 g, 3 h), signed by the artist "A", circa 420. Charioteer, holding kentron in left hand and reins in right, driving slow quadriga right; above, Nike flying to left, crowning charioteer with wreath. Rev. ΣVRΑKΟΣΙ-ΟΝ Head of Arethusa to right, wearing earring and a necklace with a lion's head pendant, hair bound in sakkos drawn together at top and decorated with a meander pattern above chevrons and inscribed with the artist's signature A; around, four dolphins clockwise. Boehringer 695 (V343/R474). SNG ANS 231 (same dies). The obverse weakly struck from worn dies, scrapes on the reverse, otherwise, nearly very fine.
