THRACE. Maroneia(?). 5th-4th centuries BC. Hemiobol (Silver, 5.5 mm, 0.25 g, 2 h). Head of ram to left. Rev. Kantharos within incuse square. Tzamalis 49 (uncertain Thraco-Macedonian mint). Heavily toned. Very fine.
From the Vineyard Collection, ex H. Grün 28, 12 November 1999, 225.

The kantharos was a small two-handled cup for drinking wine. Although metal examples have been found, most were made of pottery. Several spectacular examples with bases that deviate from the normal slender pedestal mount exist. These have the heads of satyrs, maenads and other gods as a base atop which rests the cup.
