South Africa / Mafeking 1900 P-S651b PMG Choice UNC 63 1/- Shilling (Boer War)
Issued in January and February 1900 during the siege of Mafeking (which caused a sudden and immediate shortage of circulating coin), this is the initial denomination of a scarce series printed locally as an emergency measure. Typically seen in well-circulated grades, this particular example is surpassed in the PMG population report by just a single finer example. It's survival in this grade can be attributed to the fact that it was part of a group of 836 notes that were on hand at the Pay Office when the siege ended (see Paper Currency of the Anglo-Boer War by John Ineson, page 49, for more information). PMG mentions "Staple holes".
