JULIUS CAESAR. AR Denarius (3.77 gms), Military Mint Traveling with Caesar, 49 B.C. NGC MS, Strike: 5/5 Surface: 4/5.
Cr-443/1; CRI-9; Syd-1006; RSC-49. Obverse: Elephant advancing right, trampling upon horned serpent; Reverse: Emblems of the pontificate: simpulum, aspergillum, securis, and apex. Though a bit off-center upon each side, this ever-popular and iconic issue struck under Julius Caesar--and bearing his name below the elephant--rather astonishingly exhibits no signs of handling and retains elegant and enticing brilliance throughout.
Estimate: $2000 - $4000
