PERTINAX, A.D. 193. AV Aureus (7.21 gms), Rome Mint. NGC Ch EF, Strike: 5/5 Surface: 2/5. Fine Style. Edge Repair.
RIC-11B; Cal-2390 (this coin illustrated); Biaggi-1044 (this coin). Obverse: Laureate and draped bust right; Reverse: Providentia standing left, raising one hand toward star to upper left, and placing other hand upon breast. A VERY RARE type from an already briefly-reigning and difficult emperor, this alluring example offers a bold portrait of fine style along with pleasing golden-olive toning. As noted, a minor test cut on the edge between the "E" and "L" in "HELV" has been repaired, but does not at all detract from its otherwise strong appeal.
