MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1774-Mo FM. Mexico City Mint. Charles III. PCGS AU-55.
KM-106.2; Cal-1108; Yonaka-M8-74. Deeply toned and with a strike far exceeding the average 8 Reales from the Charles III era, the current example is one of the finest graded at PCGS with only 1 higher. The 1774 date from Mexico City is one of the most difficult coins in the series and often proves to be a 'stopper' for collectors demanding examples with eye appeal. The Stendebach Collection example is intriguing for several reasons, but foremost the reverse appears to be fully uncirculated - and near choice at that - while the obverse seems to have experienced some very slight cabinet friction over the last 248 years. One of the very best survivors of a difficult year - and a reverse struck so well you could shave off it (not recommended).
The Stendebach Collection.
Estimate: $600 - $900
