AZORES. Azores - Peru. 1200 Reis, ND (1887). Luiz I. NGC AU-58.
cf. KM-29 (for countermark type); Gomes-L1.21.10. Issued by decree of 31 March 1887. Countermark: Small crown above GP within circular incuse. Applied to the obverse of a 1808-LIMEA JP Peru bust 8 Reales of Charles IIII (IV) (KM-97). A fairly RARE type, this elegantly toned specimen yields an impressively strong countermark placed near the center of the obverse, across the neck of the Spanish monarch. Quite alluring quality or the host, given that the countermark was applied nearly 8 decades after the coin itself was struck.
Estimate: $1500 - $2000
