COSTA RICA. Costa Rica - Bolivia. "Carrillo" 8 Reales, ND (1841-42). PCGS VF-25, Countermark: XF Details.
KM-Unlisted (though cf. KM-97 for the host); Segura-Pg. 16 (for type); Guardian-Pg. 62/3, Type VI; ANS-1941.161.1. Issued by decree of 19 November 1841 under Braulio Carrillo Colina. Countermark: Type I, plug removed from obverse right of the bust, double 6-pointed star within circle on Bolivar's neck; Reverse: Test punch at 12 o'clock between "Republica" and "Boliviana". Applied to a 1840-PTS LR Bolivia Republic 8 Soles (KM-97). This EXTREMELY RARE host type, with only about five confirmed examples, usually appears on the market in well-worn and problematic conditions. The host offers boldly struck with moderate even wear on the high points and exposed areas. The surfaces are relatively smooth aside from a few insignificant flan flaws complemented by mottled gray patina with minor earthen deposits amongst the devices. This charming and handsome survivor offers a pleasing appearance with much originality that is sure to catch the attention of quality conscious collectors.

Estimate: $3000 - $5000
