COSTA RICA. Costa Rica - Mexico. 8 Reales, 1846-JB. San Jose Mint. PCGS Genuine--Holed, VF Details, Countermark: VF Details.
KM-62 (plate coin); de la Cruz-pg. 30 (this piece cited). Weight: 26.00 gms. Issued by decree of 15 October 1846. Countermark: Type V bifacial; Obverse: Sun over mountains, additional round 8R punch; Reverse: Ceiba tree flanked by 2R. Applied to the obverse and reverse of a 1733-Mo MF Mexico Klippe 8 Reales of Philip V (KM-48). An EXTREMELY RARE and impressive host coin, this example presents immense flair and majesty, all with little in the way of handling and while offering enchanting old cabinet toning. The hole is noted, but rather typical and easily overlooked, while some script initials "J. C." have been added to the obverse. Full of tremendous character and, even more provocatively, the plate coin for the type in the Standard Catalog of World Coins [KM].

Estimate: $4000 - $6000
