CUBA. Cuba - Mexico. Peso, ND (1872-77). PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, VF Details.
KM-R6. Countermark: Variety A, Short and thick key. Applied to the obverse of a 1867-Mo Mexico Empire of Maximilian Peso (KM-388.1). An EXTREMELY RARE host for this series with few recorded examples. The countermark is deeply impressed, though slightly uneven, on a moderately worn and wholesome looking host. The surfaces exhibits signs of handling with marks and abrasions consistent for the grade, though nothing overly distracting. Close inspection reveals evidence of a past cleaning, now attractively toned with iridescent hues amongst the devices. Despite its shortcomings this handsome example offers plenty of remaining detail with much originality and is pleasing to the eye.

It is interesting to note that since 2010 we have recorded just four examples of this host type, (1866-Mo with variety B countermark [2], 1867-Mo with variety A countermark [1], and an 186x, damaged on the last digit of the date and mintmark with variety A countermark) with the present piece being a fifth example.

Estimate: $2000 - $4000
