CUBA. Cuba - Mexico. 25 Centavos, ND (1872-77). PCGS Genuine--Tooled, Fine Details.
KM-R4.1. Countermark: Variety A, Short and thick key. Applied to the obverse of a 1870-Zs H Mexico Republic "Balance Scale" 25 Centavos (KM-406.9). Sneaky and EXTREMELY RARE found bearing two countermarks. Though a more available denomination from this series, examples featuring more than one countermark seldom come to market. The countermarks are uneven and slight obscured on a well worn host displaying lovely dove gray patina with a slight iridescent sheen. Close inspection reveals some light thin scratches in the obverse field accounting for the details designation, now toned over. Despite its shortcomings a handsome and presentable example that is pleasing to the eye.

It is interesting to note that since 2007 we have recorded only four examples for all denominations bearing a double countermark. Two are Mexico 8 Reales (1873-Mo MH and 1874-Zs JA, both with Variety B countermark) and two are United States of America 1/2 Dollars (1858-O and 1856-S, both with Variety A countermark). The present piece being a fifth example of a different denomination.

Estimate: $900 - $1200
