GUATEMALA. Guatemala - El Salvador - Bolivia. 2 Reales, ND (ca. 1839-40). PCGS VF-20, Countermark: VF Details.
KM-81; cf. Jovel-Type V Fig. 6-1. Issued by decree of 31 October to 20 November 1840. Countermark: Type II, radiant personification of the sun above mountains. Countermark applied to the obverse of a 1830-PTS JL Bolivia Republic 2 Soles (KM-95A) with previous El Salvador "Zig-Zag" scribe mark (KM-10) (Decree of 18 December 1834 until at least 1839). A rather interesting a VERY RARE confluence of assayer testing's, this minor first presents the "zig-zag" scribe marks utilized in El Salvador from 1834-39 to validate the purity of circulating coinage. Its presence on a Bolivian host is already quite startling and seldom seen, with it then being countermarked a second time late in 1840 for Guatemala. We could locate only one such other example in which the same host as the present specimen displayed the same countermark combination--a similarly graded 2 Soles in our Ponterio sale 159 (3/2011) Lot # 10359, which realized a total of $1,783.

Estimate: $1500 - $3000
