GUATEMALA. Guatemala - South Peru. 8 Reales, ND (1840). PCGS AU-50. Countermark: AU Details.
KM-120.6; Jovel-Type VI Fig. 6-9 (plate coin). Issued by decree of 31 October 1840, instituted 20 November to December. Countermark: Type III, radiant personification of the sun above mountains; Reverse: radiant personification of the sun on five-pointed star and over bow, quiver, and arrows within circular incuse. Applied to the obverse and reverse, respectively, of a 1838-CUZCO South Peru Republic 8 Reales (KM-170.4). Seldom encountered with few examples known this EXTREMELY RARE and impressive specimen retains elegant detail and toning upon the host, this crown actually features three personifications of the sun in that, outside of the two from the applied countermarks, there is a large radiant personification of the sun that is nearly eclipsed by the obverse countermark. Highly interesting, enchanting and certain to catch the attention of even the most advanced of collectors.
In an effort to deter counterfeiting, the above decree was issued to have a secondary mark to be applied to the opposite side of all authorized coins. Ultimately the use of the independent dies proved to be inefficient and impractical. In December hinged dies were prepared which allowed much easier application.
Estimate: $1500 - $2500
