NETHERLANDS EAST INDIES. Madura Islands - Batavian Republic. Gulden, ND (ca. 1811-54). Sultan Paku Nata Ningrat. NGC AU-55.
KM-Unlisted. Countermark: Variety S1d; Flower-like design. Applied to the obverse of a 1802 Batavian Republic Gulden (KM-83). The countermark is bold and complete on a gently circulated host displaying rich old mottled cabinet patina. A somewhat SCARCE host for this series, specially so found in this high state of preservation, and should be highly desirable.

It is interesting to note that the location of the star punch, like many countermarked issues, appears to be in the same general area. When comparing other host coins, again this holds true. For example, Spanish or Maria Theresa coinage appear to have the mark to the right of the portrait. That said there are a few outliers where the countermark appears in different locations, but these are the exception and not the rule.

Estimate: $900 - $1200
