PHILIPPINES. Philippines - Mexico. 8 Reales, ND (1834-37). Manila Mint. Isabel II. PCGS AU-50, Countermark: AU Details.
KM-Unlisted; Basso-56; PNM#6-136; PNM#16-304; PNM#21-119; Cacho-Unlisted; Gil-5-4-3-III. Type VI countermark; crowned Y.II. within circular indent. Issued by decree of 20 December 1834, suppressed 31 March 1837 (By Decree of 1 February 1836). Countermark applied to the obverse of a 1832-Do RM/L Mexico Republic 8 Reales, clean date. One of the more abundant dates from this sought after mint, the clean date version being most prominent, we have more than 10 examples documented. The countermark is boldly applied, though the "Y" of the queen's cipher is slightly obscured, on a nicely preserved host. The surfaces are smooth displaying light attractive mottled patina with much remaining luster in the protected areas and minor earthen deposits amongst the devices adding to its originality and pleasing appearance. Seldom encountered in this high state of preservation, this handsome survivor offers good eye appeal that is certain to catch the attention of many collectors.

It is worth mentioning that this particular countermark offers an interesting diagnostic crack in the queen's ordinal "II" where is appears as "И" making attribution of the pearl sequence quite easy.

Estimate: $1500 - $2500
