PHILIPPINES. Philippines - Mexico. 8 Reales, ND (1834-37). Manila Mint. Isabel II. PCGS Genuine--Corrosion Removed, VF Details, Countermark: EF Details.
KM-Unlisted; Basso-56; PNM#6-127 (plate coin); PNM#16-281 (plate coin); PNM#21-VIII-98; Cacho-IX-CS-044; Gil-5-4-3-III. Countermark: Type VI, crowned Y.II. within circle. Issued by decree of 20 December 1834, suppressed 31 March 1837 (By Decree of 1 February 1836). Countermark applied to the obverse of a 1829-EoMo LF Mexico Republic 8 Reales. This short lived mint is always a collector favorite, whether Philippines or Mexico, striking coins for only three years we have just nine documented examples. The countermark is boldly applied with good definition of the details and features a small crack offering an interesting diagnostic for this punch. The host, though heavily sought after, does exhibit quite bit of corrosion in the obverse fields accounting for the details designation, now toned over and attractive. Despite its shortcomings a presentable and affordable example of the type that is sure to be a welcome addition to the next collection it enters.
