PHILIPPINES. Philippines - Mexico. 8 Reales, ND (1834-37). Manila Mint. Isabel II. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, EF Details, Countermark: EF Details.
KM-A130; Basso-56; PNM#6-151; PNM#16-331; PNM#21-VIII-140; Cacho-IX-CS-068; Gil-5-3-1-I. Countermark: Type IV, crowned Y.II. within circular indent. Issued by decree of 20 December 1834, suppressed 31 March 1837 (By Decree of 1 February 1836). Countermark applied to the obverse of an 1834-Pi JS Mexico Republic 8 Reales, clean date (KM-377.12). A seldom encountered mint with few dates known to bear a Philippines countermark, for this date we have only five recorded examples. The countermark is boldly applied, though slightly cock-eyed on a decently preserved host displaying light gray tone with minor earthen deposits amongst the devices. Close inspection reveals evidence of a past cleaning now slightly subdued by the light patina. Despite its shortcomings a presentable example with plenty of remaining luster in the protected areas and is sure to be a welcome addition to the next collection it enters.

Estimate: $1000 - $1500
