PORTUGAL. Portugal - Mexico. 870 Reis, ND (1834). Maria II. PCGS AU-53, Countermark: AU Details.
KM-440.15; Gomes-M2.29.48. Issued by decree of 1 September 1834. Countermark: Crowned arms of Portugal within shaped indent. Applied to the obverse of a 1819-Mo JJ Mexico bust 8 Reales of Ferdinand VII (KM-111). This beautifully preserved and very attractive survivor is by and far nicer than normally encountered from this series. Examples from this issuance can easily be obtained in various grades and host coins, usually up to very fine, but occasional appear in extremely fine or better and even less above almost uncirculated. The countermark is deeply impressed, bold and fully detailed on a lightly handled lovely host. The surfaces exhibit signs of handling consistent for the assigned grade and display rich old cabinet patina. Offering a pleasing appearance this handsome example is sure to pique the interest of quality conscious collectors.

According to the NGC and PCGS population reports there are 60 numerically graded with an addition 23 details certified (NGC), but only five are in almost uncirculated condition with only one in mint state. Obviously, there are many multiples of this issue that have never been submitted to a third party grading service, but based on the number of examples observed being heavily worn or problematic this cataloger believes that the number of high quality examples would not be impacted to any great degree.

Estimate: $1000 - $1500
