PORTUGAL. Portugal - Mexico. 870 Reis, ND (1834). Maria II. PCGS EF-45, Countermark: AU Details.
KM-440.12; Gomes-M2.29.48. Issued by decree of 1 September 1834. Countermark: Crowned arms of Portugal within shaped indent. Applied to the obverse of a 1819-Mo JJ Mexico bust 8 Reales of Ferdinand VII (KM-111). The countermark is boldly applied, though slightly uneven, with minor weakness in the center of the crown on a nicely preserved host. The surfaces are relatively smooth with only minor marks displaying attractive light gray coloration that's complemented by richer patina amongst the devices. Much luster remains in the protected areas popping out when rotated in hand adding to its pleasing appearance. Seldom encountered in states of preservation above VERY FINE examples found in EXTREMELY FINE or better should be considered SCARCE and desirable.

In 1834 the Government ordered all Spanish and Spanish colonial 8 Reales then in circulation to be countermarked with the crowned arm of Portugal raising the value to 870 Reis and revalidating them to circulate freely.

From the David Sterling Collection.

Estimate: $800 - $1200
