SPANISH NETHERLANDS. Spanish Netherlands - Mexico. Brabant. 48 Patards, ND (1652-72). Philip IV of Spain. NGC F-12. Countermark: Weak VF.
Delm-324. Weight: 26.10 gms. Issued by decree of 1 October 1650. Countermark: Golden Fleece within shield incuse. Applied to the obverse of an undated Mexico Cob 8 Reales of Philip IV (KM-45). Given the large number of silver coins circulating from parts of the New World, Philip authorized assayers to test the content of cob issues such as this coin in order to confirm the proper purity. As such, this elusive and SCARCE Golden Fleece counterstamp was applied. A charming example with a good deal of handling and wear observed throughout.
Estimate: $1500 - $2500
