BOHEMIA. Joachimsthal. Medallic "Pestilence" Taler, 1528. NGC EF Details--Mount Removed.
Katz-8; Brettauer-1473. Obverse: Serpent-entwined cross, with six men kneeling to left and six to right; four dead bodies at base; Reverse: Christ on cross, with six men kneeling to left and six to right. Attractively toned and offering great detail remaining, even in the legends, this specimen does exhibit evidence of a mount removal, an aspect that is quite common given the nature of these medallic issues. "Pestilence" Talers were issued as religious amulets during times of plague, so the mounting is typical, in that this piece was likely worn as a way to ward off disease and pestilence.

From the Augustana Collection.

Estimate: $1000 - $1500
