Obverse: Head facing on central medallion, all set upon a star of eight points, with alchemical symbols between each point; in the margins, four allegorical and mythical figures in various positions; Reverse: SOC. / CHEM. / INDVSTR. / OPTIME / MERENTI in five lines within central medallion; all within wreath. Edge: SIR CYRIL HINSHELWOOD, O.M., F.R.S. 1961 (engraved) & six hallmarks, one of which conveys the fineness (0.375 or 9k). Includes original box of issue. A VERY RARE and enticing medal, this piece was awarded to the Nobel laureate in 1956 in the field of chemistry. Quite elegantly toned, with some cabernet hues in the recesses.
