NEW ZEALAND. Crown, 1949. London Mint. George VI. PCGS PROOF-65.
KM-22. Purported Mintage: 9. One of the seminal issues of the New Zealand series, this Proof offering is the only New Zealand Crown to feature a portrait of George VI. Struck to commemorate a planned royal visit to New Zealand, which was called off because of health ailments that had begun to take a toll on the reluctant king, this Crown can boast an interesting backstory in addition to its elusiveness. While Krause reports a mintage of 3, this seems too low, given that 9 examples are certified by either PCGS or NGC. Even still, the type remains far more demanded than supplied. Soft reflectivity emanates from the surfaces, with just a touch of fog in the fields being the only fault against this piece. A tremendous specimen that is certain to capture the bids of many.
Estimate: $8000 - $12000
