PHILIPPINES. Barrilla, 1728. Manila Mint. VERY GOOD Details. Environmental Damage.
KM-Pn2; Basso-1. Cast uniface Barilla with arms of Manila stamped in center. An EXCEEDINGLY RARE and desirable issue from the very beginnings of Philippines numismatics. The normal crudity of the issue is displayed by this example, with some deposits seen in addition to surface porosity. Nevertheless the nearly all of the legends are present, and this piece retains a rustic charm to it.

According to the Central Bank of the Philippines Quarterly Vol. II #1, this type was unknown until 1948, when the first specimen was found in the ruins of an old building in St. Tomas.

Note: Neither PCGS nor NGC are presently certifying this cast issue and as such, inability to gain certification after the auction does not substantiate reasoning for a return.

Estimate: $5000 - $7000
