PHILIPPINES. Inauguration of the Manila Mint Gold Medal, 1861. Manila Mint. Isabel II. PCGS MS-61.
Basso-96a; Honeycutt-16. Struck to commemorate the opening of the Manila mint March 19, 1861. The Royal decree of September 8, 1857 was specific to the authorization of gold coinage. Obverse: Bust of Isabel II left, legend around; Reverse: Arms of Manila in wreath, legend around, date below. A VERY RARE occurrence when struck in gold, this tremendous specimen displays good details and much mint brilliance. Some friction accounts for the grade assigned, though this medal is so elusive that this should serve as no impediment to any collector. A wonderful piece deserving of adulation from a specialist in Philippines coinage.
Estimate: $5000 - $10000
