SOUTH AFRICA. "Burgers" Pond, 1874. Birmingham (Heaton) Mint. NGC MS-61.
Fr-1; KM-1.2; Hern-B1. Fine beard type. Mintage: 695. By L. C. Wyon. Serving as the first Pond for the nation and featuring the bust of Thomas Francois Burgers, the fourth president of the South African Republic, this "Burgers" Pond undoubtedly stands as one of the kings in the South African series, along with the "Veld" Pond from the Second Boer War. On account of its small mintage figure and the fact that much of the emission exhibits problems and/or circulation to some degree, examples that remains wholesome and even uncirculated, such as this specimen, are undoubtedly at a premium and generate that much more enthusiasm when crossing the auction block. Rather accordingly, this Mint State stunner--a VERY RARE chance at an exceptionally tantalizing coin--should approach lofty levels, garnering a great deal of interest from an eager public.
Estimate: $20000 - $30000
