SOUTH AFRICA. Second Boer War. "Veld" Pond, 1902. Pilgrim's Rest Mint. NGC MS-63.
Fr-4; KM-11; Hern-Z54; Korchnak-556. Mintage: 986. Presenting a fairly basic overall design, with the Republic's monogram, denomination, and date being the only aspects, this VERY RARE and ever desirable siege issue was issued in a rather remote area in the Transvaal gold fields during the Second Boer War. Its name, known numismatically as the "veld" type, emanates from the grassy area in which it was struck, veld coming from the Afrikaans for "field." Making this specimen that much more impressive and incredible is its excellent state of preservation. A fair number of the survivors from this paltry emission failed to remain without some degree of handling or problems, with use in jewelry being a common occurrence. As such, the heights to which this fabled and highly historical piece could soar are exciting to imagine.

Estimate: $20000 - $30000
