SOUTH AFRICA. Gold Off-Metal Presentation 3 Pence (Tickey), 1898. Pretoria Mint. NGC MS-62.

An exceedingly popular and EXTREMELY RARE off-metal striking in gold, this "Tickey" utilizes the dies of the contemporary 3 Pence, though struck in gold instead as a presentation piece. Many from the paltry emission have failed to survive without issue, as their enigmatic and odd nature made them ideal candidates for usage in jewelry. The present specimen, however, remains wholly original and brilliant, with a subtle degree of frosting upon the devices that seemingly lends to it a prooflike allure. Undoubtedly a great opportunity for the advanced collector of ZAR issues or world gold coinage more broadly.
