GERMANY. Lubeck. Gold Off-Metal Taler of 9 Ducats Weight, 1537. Free City. PCGS FINE-12.
Fr-Unlisted; KM (MB)-57 (as 10 Ducats weight). Weight: 31.19 gms. In the name of Emperor Karl V (Charles I of Spain). Obverse: Capped and draped bust of Karl right; Reverse: Knight kneeling left, holding sword and resting hand upon coat-of-arms. Though in rather heavily circulated condition, as its grade would indicate, this specimen represents an IMMENSELY RARE opportunity for a coin that may well be UNIQUE. Struck on a gold planchet to the weight on 9 Ducats and utilizing the current Taler dies, this piece occupies a very interesting and unusual spot, and undoubtedly presents a phenomenal chance for the advanced collector of gold RARITIES or off-metal strikes. A slightly larger specimen to the weight of 10 Ducats is known in the coin cabinet in Lubeck, but no other examples of the type have been seen at this weight.

From the Augustana Collection.

Ex: Kuenker 155 (6/2009) Lot # 3883.

Estimate: $5000 - $10000
