GERMANY. Saxony. Gold Medallic 12 Ducats, 1630. Johann Georg I. NGC AU Details--Rim Damage.
Fr-2692; cf. Dav-7604 (for silver 2 Taler). Diameter: 46mm. Weight: 41.3 gms. Commemorating the Centennial of the Augsburg Confession. Obverse: Crowned and enrobed half-length bust of Johann Georg right; Reverse: Robed bust of Johann, predecessor of Johann Georg. An impressive and hulking gold issue struck with the dies used for the silver 2 Taler of the same design (Dav-7604). Nicely struck and showing scarcely any evidence of handling, this wonderful specimen delivers unmitigated charm and appeal to the eyes. The noted edge damage is seen near 3 o'clock, taking the form of limited flatness. This does little to detract from the overall beauty of the piece, and we expect much fervent competition to be the next owner of this wonderful specimen.
From the Augustana Collection.
